Long-Distance Hiking Guide

Expert advice on how to prepare for your journey.

The key to comfort is managing moisture and temperature. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer (synthetic or wool), add an insulating mid-layer (fleece or down), and finish with a waterproof/breathable shell. Never wear cotton, as it traps moisture and cools you down.
To lighten your load, focus on "The Big Three": your backpack, shelter (tent), and sleep system (bag/pad). These are the heaviest items. Aiming to get the combined weight of these three under 3kg (6.6 lbs) is a great goal for long-distance comfort.
Stop immediately if you feel a "hot spot" on your foot. Apply moleskin or tape before a blister forms. Keep your feet dry by changing socks at midday. Ensure your boots are broken in with at least 50 miles of walking before a major trip.
Never drink untreated water. Squeeze filters (like Sawyer) are popular for their speed and weight. Chemical drops (chlorine dioxide) are lightweight backups. UV purifiers are effective but rely on batteries. Always carry a backup method.

Voices from the Trail

The Summit Pro pack saved my back on the Appalachian Trail. I hiked 2,200 miles and it held up perfectly. Best investment I've made.

I was skeptical about ultralight gear durability, but the Trekking Station recommendations were spot on. My kit weight dropped by 5lbs.

Fast shipping and excellent customer service. The guide section really helped me plan my first solo trip in the Alps.
